My Essential Appliance: Escali Alimento Stainless Steel Top Scale

In baking and beer brewing, my two biggest passions, precision matters. When my old, battered scale died an honorable death, I decided to upgrade to this bad boy. It measures down to the gram at lightning speed, and I wouldn’t be too surprised if it could leap tall buildings in a single bound as well.

This Escali 136DK Alimento Stainless Steel Top Scale is, in fact, the same scale my local brewing supply store uses for weighing large quantities of malted grain for beer recipes. I was at first intimidated, and then subsequently enchanted, by this complex, super-precise measuring instrument. I was sold when the store owner said that these scales have remained functional and precise over multiple years of constant customer use.

This scale not only measures down to the gram, but also ounces to the tenth (ie, 24.8 oz), pounds to the thousandth (ie, 1.550 lbs), and then a combination of pounds and ounces (ie, 1 lb 8.8 oz). You can tare the scale back to zero at any point to measure new items on top of old items, but the scale also remembers the preceding weights and can tell you the total with the touch of a button. Super fancy!

The scale is admittedly bulkier than your average kitchen scale, but it’s still surprisingly light. The weighing platform is wide enough to accommodate big bowls and easily lifts off for cleaning. And then there’s my personal favorite feature: the buttons are covered with a plastic coating. This means no stray drips or puffs of flour can gunk up the space around or behind the buttons and the scale is easy to wipe clean.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also give a shout-out to my former kitchen scale, the Polder Add n’ Weigh Scale. This slim scale served me well for years. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a basic kitchen scale and don’t need quite the neurotic precision of the Escali. It measures accurately to about 5 grams and will give fractions of ounces (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, etc.).

If it’s possible to love any inanimate kitchen appliance, I love this scale. I foresee many years of happy measuring in our future.
