While I love summer and most of the things that come with it — picnics and potlucks chief among them — a few aspects make the season a little less pleasant. Constant sweating is one, but even worse is that mosquitoes are everywhere. It’s hard to enjoy grilling in your backyard or eating dinner outdoors if you’re swatting away bugs the entire time. It doesn’t help matters that I seem to be a mosquito magnet, either.

After leaving Texas behind for New York, I thought that I’d also be leaving the mosquitoes, but I was mistaken. Especially now that I’m moving into an apartment with a balcony, I know it’s about to get even worse. Still, I don’t want the bugs to stop me from lounging in my outdoor space this summer — which is why I’ve added a repelling solution to my shopping list. I don’t want one that’s an eyesore or gives off that gross chemical smell, but I just found one on Amazon that actually adds to the ambiance and, according to shoppers, actually smells good. I’m talking about Murphy’s Naturals Mosquito Repellent Incense Sticks.

What Are Murphy’s Naturals Mosquito Repellent Incense Sticks?

These incense sticks don’t just protect you from mosquitoes for over two hours at a time — they’re also a natural solution that won’t bother you with the awful chemical smell most others have. In fact, they’ll actually give off a scent that blends cedarwood, lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary, and citronella, all of which are plant-based repellents. After burning one stick for 20 seconds and blowing it out, it’ll cover a 12-foot radius. All you have to do is place it in a holder or conveniently located pot filled with sand, and you’ll be golden for the rest of your day or evening outside.

What Amazon Shoppers Are Saying

Average Rating: 4.4/5

“I spend a lot of time in my backyard gardening. This last month has been the worst in memory for mosquitoes. Decided to try these and they are fantastic. I use three to four of them at a time, and place them in different spots in the garden. I was skeptical but ultimately super impressed at how well they repelled mosquitoes. It is a dramatic difference when using them. They burn for a few hours and aren’t overwhelmingly scented.” — Batman

“I really like this product. It does keep mosquitoes away for hours, and they smell very good, like a campfire without the smoke. I’ve not had luck with other natural products like weed killer, but these work. Price is good, too.” — Margaret Butler

“It kind of feels like you are burning incense, which lends a nice vibe to hanging outside and people watching. These are my favorite. I also like how easily they clean up. No waste like candles and not over-involved or hazardous like tiki torches and MUCH cheaper than the little battery machines.” — Living Libros

Place it on your table as the centerpiece, set it right next to the grill, or bring it with you on a picnic — these sticks take up barely any space, but the effect they’ll have is huge. Over 10,000 five-star reviews can’t be wrong, so don’t wait to grab them before summer really kicks off!
