How to Make an Intensely Chocolatey Black Forest Cake at Home

Thanksgiving may have been all about the turkey, but as many of us know, Christmastime is all about the cookies and cakes. While you may already be busy churning out Peppermint Red Velvet Cake Rolls and Peppermint Mocha Snack Cakes for those closest to you, if you’re curious to know just what cake flavor people in other states are probably going to be chomping down on this holiday season, you might be shocked to know it’s nothing peppermint-laced.

In a recent study by popular jeweler company Shane Co., each state’s preferred cake flavor was revealed and I’ve got to tell you, I didn’t expect any of these results. Gathering the information from Google Trends search data over the course of the last 12 months, the new report focused on 30 of the most common cake flavors and for many states, there was one clear winner.

Holding the crown for 10 states total — including Arizona, Illinois, Maryland, Oregon, and New Jersey — Ice Cream Cake turned out to be the number one preferred cake. Strawberry Cake landed in the second spot with seven states finding it be a favorite pick among the lot.

Although Molten Lava Cake found itself as the preferred cake in five states, other chocolatey favorites like Devil’s Food Cake and regular Chocolate Cake each held their respective title in two states each. And, surprisingly, Red Velvet Cake and White Cake found themselves at the bottom of the list as only one state each declared them to be their favorite option.

Other cakes that found their way onto the list whether by one state’s choosing or by three were Sponge Cake, Carrot Cake, Cheesecake, Funfetti Cake (can you believe that only two states find this to be delicious?!), Pound Cake, Pumpkin Spice Cake, Butter Cake, Cookie Cake, Lemon Cake, Marble Cake, Orange Cake, Pistachio Cake, and German Chocolate Cake.

While your state’s consensus of popular cakes might fall in line with what you’ll be making this holiday season, if it doesn’t, don’t fret. Everyone knows the underdog (i.e. your favorite cake) always wins.
