Moon River Chattel: Brooklyn, NY

The general store is not extinct yet. Williamsburg’s Moon River Chattel provides a wide-ranging collection of practical if pricey housewares. Cooks will be drawn to the collection of yellow ware canisters (four for $110), Vermont cutting boards and cafe au lait bowls (four for $30).

The wire “locker baskets” would work for storing potatoes and onions. If you’re looking for special art to decorate your kitchen or dining area, the store features many unframed food and botanical prints, priced at $50 – $150, depending on the subject and quality of the print. Cat and dog food bowls handmade by Judy Jackson could be a special treat for your pet. Hemp dishtowels and tablerunners have a strong, rough-hewn look and an appealing natural color.

To paraphrase lyrics from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, this Moon River is both a “dream maker” and “heart breaker”. This hardware store style approach to shabby chic housekeeping is immediately appealing, but at these high prices for many basics, creating the whole look from this shop is not practical. Still, visit this mercantile to pick up a nutmeg grater or some penny candy, while appreciating the opportunity to see dramatic look in action.

Moon River also an architectural salvage shop — often including cabinets, sinks and hardware — across the street from this store.
