Before & After: A “Lackluster” All-White Kitchen Gets a Gorgeous Pink Makeover (It’s Totally Unrecognizable!)
Color-drenching an entire home is a design choice and commitment that isn’t taken lightly. Rian knows that better than most, as her Amsterdam apartment is decked out in shades of pink.
“I thought to myself: ‘What’s my favorite color?’ And the answer is pink,” Rian says. “My aim was to create an all-pink apartment that’s also modern — a place that I would enjoy more than my 6-year-old niece (whose favorite color is also pink) would.”
When I say her entire home is pink, I mean her entire home — and that includes her kitchen. When she moved in, it’s fair to say the kitchen was lackluster and somewhat outdated. “It was a white shell with a few cabinets and a removable stove and fridge,” Rian says.
After painting the walls in Histor’s “Rose Glory” and ceilings in Histor’s “Fluffy Slipper” to blend with the living area, Rian’s partner added vinyl wrap to the cabinets in a bright pink color. For the final blush touch, she hung a light pink backsplash from Tile.Expert on the kitchen walls and peninsula.
“The tiles are wavy, and the tiler had to manually grout [them]. That took longer than expected,” Rian explains. “But it’s worth it — the tiles are a subtle shade of pink and are not only used as the backsplash but also as a decorative element to the bar to keep a unified feel.”
Rian wanted to replace the original appliances with more modern versions, so she purchased a new dishwasher, fridge, freezer, water tap, and ceramic cooker. One of her favorite additions is the light above the bar, which doubles as fabulous plant storage. She also worked with a designer at Interikleur who showed her how her bar could be an alternative to a traditional dining table.
“Because I don’t use dining tables a lot, I chose to include a bar with the kitchen so that I’d have extra storage space (there are four big drawers in the bar) and still have room for four people to sit together in a more formal setting,” she says.
And this isn’t the only room in Rian’s home that’s drenched in pink. To see more of her vibrant space, visit the full home tour on Apartment Therapy.
