In a video recently posted to TikTok, the creator demonstrates how to use a microwave spinner to serve food a la a lazy Susan. First, the glass microwave plate is removed, followed by the ring that sits beneath it. Then, simply place the ring and the glass plate atop a round tray and voila! A DIY spinning serving tray is ready in a matter of seconds.

On a similar video, people took to the comments immediately, eagerly applauding the inventive solution. One commenter wrote, “So clever, thinking out of the box.” Another user even added, “This is giving me an idea to help me frost my cakes!” 

Although some commenters were quick to praise this clever microwave hack, others were less impressed. “Because that bowl of chips and salsa is so much more accessible now that it spins,” wrote one Instagram user. A few others were concerned from a practical perspective. One user chimed in to ask “If you break that, what will you do?” and another pointed out that the trick is “not secure and not steady.”

Lazy Susans have been around for hundreds of years, so there’s no denying this hack has its uses. They are perfect for serving lots of people at once and an ideal choice for family-style entrées or appetizers, like charcuterie boards. Sure, you could go out and buy an actual lazy Susan, but in a pinch this microwave trick may very well save the day.
