Leela is a new member of the team, and we're so glad to have her beautiful photography, interview skills, and finely-tuned sense of all things beautiful and delicious. Leela lives in Portland, Oregon, and she brings us a weekly feature as well as our new favorite feature: Breakfast with a Blogger! Read on for some favorite posts from Leela, as well as her secret indulgence and most-loved kitchen tool.

  1. What's your favorite kitchen tool?
My hands. As a private chef and cooking instructor, and creating most of our home meals, I cook a lot. I have asbestos-lined fingertips at this point. I use my hands for flipping most things on the stove-top and the oven: pancakes, tofu cutlets, quesadillas, naan and pizzas to name a few tasty morsels. I also use my hands for mixing almost everything: bread doughs, crunchy kale-slaw salads. Yes this is born of a bit of laziness, but every time I reach for a pizza peel or tongs, it just doesn't give me the same results and it takes longer (not to mention the clean up!). When I use my hands, I literally connect with my food, testing by feel for doneness and texture. This method also enables me to thoroughly sample my batters and doughs — one of my favorite parts of the cooking process.

  2. What's your secret indulgence in the kitchen?
I adore fancy loose-leaf teas and drink them all day long. It's an expensive habit, but when you live in the Pacific Northwest, you must have all manners of cozyness surrounding your life at all times. I enjoy Kusmi Teas, which come in colorful tins from Paris, Steven Smith Teas blended here in Portland, Oregon, PG Tips on occasion as well as several other black teas picked up from local tea shops and abroad. Because tea is something I derive so much pleasure from and consume so much of, I don't mind spending a few extra bucks on it.

  3. What's your favorite quote on food, cooking, or eating?
"Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come join us. Life is so endlessly delicious." - Ruth Reichl
