Meet the 13 New Food Emojis Coming Soon to a Device Near You
Emojis have become an essential way to communicate via text — after all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Of the 1,851 emojis available to users, only 62 pertain to food — that’s a little over three percent. Not a lot! That’s why I’m so excited about the recent emoji update, which will include 13 brand-new food emojis to express your feelings and desires via text. Rejoice!
The Unicode Consortium, the official body that creates and standardizes emojis, has confirmed 56 new emojis. Of the 56 emojis, 13 of them will join the food emoji squad. Here’s a complete list.
- Soda cup
- Takeout box
- Bowl with spoon
- Canned food
- A coconut
- A fortune cookie
- A pretzel
- A cut of meat
- A sandwich
- A dumpling
“Dumplings are one of the most universal cross-cultural foods in the world,” reads the Kickstarter page. “Poland has pierogi. Nepal has momos. Russia has pelmeni, Japan has gyoza. Italy has ravioli. Georgia has khinkali. Korea has mandoo. Jews have kreplach. Argentina has empanadas, and China has potstickers.”
Creating a diverse emoji menu is more challenging than one might think. “I tried designing a hummus emoji and that did not go well,” Lee — whose campaign is also responsible for the takeout box, fortune cookie, and chopsticks — told NPR’s The Salt. “It has to be visually distinctive as a food: Falafel would just be little brown balls. A lot of Indian foods like chaat or dosa are also hard — it has to be something that is iconic enough to make it through the process.”
