After the year we’ve all had, this teacher is glad to finally be on vacation. But even as things head back to some form of normal, it seems like many people are about one Zoom meeting away from calling it quits. That’s why this summer — more than any other — we need some wine down time. With summer break in full swing and the sun still up late, I can’t think of a better bottle to enjoy than the wine from Black Girl Magic by the McBride Sisters.

For those of us already in the know, Black Girl Magic is a phrase that’s meant to embody everything wholesome about Black women and our culture. From kicking butt in classrooms and boardrooms; to taking on the Olympic Games by land, sea, and air; and even becoming Vice President of the United States, Black women have a ton to celebrate. What better way to do it than by getting with our sisters and having a glass of wine?

Speaking of sisters, Black Girl Magic (the wine) is the brainchild of two siblings who are taking the industry by storm: Robin and Andrea McBride. Having come together to make a range of wines that pay homage to California and New Zealand, they’ve created bottles that are rejuvenating and delicious enough for any occasion.

I had the pleasure of watching Robin and Andrea speak about their brand and mission as part of House of Pure Vin’s Wine Curator series. The McBride sisters not only want to make space for Black women to buy wine, but also to produce it, and help them become leaders and entrepreneurs in their communities. They even launched a program, called She Can Fund, with the mission to close the gender and race gap in leadership positions in wine and spirits. And they have a special line of wines (She Can!) — the proceeds from those wines go to scholarships and partnerships for female leaders in male-dominated fields. With my own family taking part in the wine industry here in Detroit, it’s nice to see that Black women are carving out a space at the table.

Robin and Andrea took their time with Black Girl Magic, ensuring that each bottle caters to the various tastes of wine consumers. I personally love the sweet and soft taste of their rosé, although you also can’t go wrong with their Zinfandel. Whether you prefer red, white, or something in between, Black Girl Magic has something that any wine drinker (even the casual partaker) can enjoy. Even better? At $20 to $30 per bottle, the Black Girl Magic wines won’t break your bank.

Whether you’re pouring a glass or popping a can this summer, McBride Sisters certainly have the vino that will make each memory more fantastic than the last. It doesn’t matter if you’re enjoying it in your home or at your local bar (if it’s available there!) — be sure to give McBride Sisters wine a try. I guarantee you’ll begin to believe in the magic.
