What challenge have you overcome in your kitchen? In March of 2009 our original 550sqft apartment building caught fire. The fire originated in some old wiring within our kitchen wall. When the smoke cleared our unit and two others were totally destroyed, thankfully no one was injured. As tragic as the situation was, it eventually afforded us a sort of clean slate with which to rebuild and renovate our tiny living space to better suit our needs. (continued)

What challenge have you overcome in your kitchen? (continued)
We wanted to open up the original space and make the kitchen more usable. The firefighters had taken care of demoing most of the kitchen/living room wall for us already, so we just finished the job. We also took the time to strip and sandblast the main adjoining wall and expose the nearly 100 year old brick beneath. In place of the original kitchen wall we built an island for storage (the original kitchen had none). We managed to fit in a shallow-depth full-sized fridge, cabinet mount oven, black granite sink, and a cook top that often doubles as extra counter space.
We cook often, and the new setup now allows us both space in the kitchen. All and all we have turned a tragic situation to a positive chance to spend more time in the kitchen.
What’s the story of your kitchen?
Our kitchen is a tiny galley in a small 550sqft apartment. After burning down in 2009 we rebuilt it to better suit our lifestyle. Better, faster, stronger!
What is your favorite meal to cook here?
