When Mary Berry announced in 2016 that she was leaving The Great British Bake-Off, but that Paul Hollywood was staying, it felt like The Beatles were breaking up. Bake-Off was a fantastic show unlike any other, and a big part of its riveting-but-wholesome vibe was due to the great rapport between Berry and Hollywood.
But there's good news around the corner: It looks like Berry and Hollywood might be getting back together on The Great American Baking Show.
This is a great idea. Great American Baking Show has reportedly not been doing very well, compared to the powerhouse that was GBBO in its heyday. But according to The Sun, the ABC Network doesn't want to give up on it yet. They still have hope to capture some of the show's magic, and they seem to realize that a lot of that magic came from its judges.
ABC Network president Channing Dungey told The Sun that the network is very excited about The Great American Baking Show, and said she was hopeful about the possibility of Berry joining Hollywood for the next season, "depending on schedule."
Berry and Hollywood were great together. They were like watching a great buddy cop movie — but instead of solving a murder, they were investigating the crumb of a Victoria sponge cake.
Berry is elegant and thoughtful, and always kind while simultaneously being completely straightforward in her critiques. Hollywood is cool and funny. He's great with a sidelong glance or a loaded eyebrow raise, and Berry says he's "quite sexy." They seem like they should mix like oil and water, but they got on just great. They're flirty and fun, and they both care deeply about the proper density of crumb in a ciabatta bread.
Mary Berry actually judged the first two seasons of The Great American Baking Show with American pastry chef Johnny Iuzzini, and then she left and Paul Hollywood came on to judge the third season, also with Iuzzini. The third season was pulled off the air last month after airing just two episodes, after several former employees allegedly accused Iuzzini of sexual harassment.
But it sounds like a new season could be in the cards — especially if they manage to give fans what they want and put Berry and Hollywood back together. Then if they can just bring back Mel and Sue, it'll really be magic.
