Martha Stewart’s Charming DIY Café Curtains Are Made from a Classic Kitchen Staple

If you’ve been on the lookout for the perfect café curtain to add a little extra privacy to space but can’t seem to find one that fits your aesthetic, Martha Stewart may have the answer — make one yourself!

Stewart’s official Instagram page and blog posted a how-to for DIY tea towel café curtains and the look is the perfect solution for those who subscribe to a shabby chic style.

“Cut an assortment of same-size dishcloths (we used semi-sheer linen ones) up the middle, and hem the raw edges; then mix and match the panels, alternating prints and colors,” the Feb. 27 Instagram caption reads. “When you find a combo that works, stitch the sections together and attach the finished curtain to a simple rod for a custom creation that’s easy—and breezy.”

As written in the blog post, Stewart’s team used a sampling of linen kitchen cloths from FogLinen, which offers a plethora of stripes, check, ginghams, and solids in a handful of colors.

But this DIY project is awesome for those who have been collecting thrifted tea towels or hand-me-down vintage linens, too. You can often find vintage linens and tea towels at thrift stores and estate sales for incredibly cheap prices, so keep your eyes peeled for ones that may work in the space you’re hoping to make curtains for.

You can even scale up this DIY and make longer and wider curtains, too. Rather than cutting the tea towels up the middle, you can simply keep them whole and sew a bunch together at the sides and ends to make a patchwork curtain that fits a standard-sized window (or larger!).
