Before & After: This Luxe Dining Room Redo Is Filled with Lots of Ideas to Copy
If you’re lucky enough to have a dining room, you might be looking for ways to make it feel fresh and inviting — especially if yours feels, like designer Inna Kovalinksy says of the one above, “bland and dysfunctional.”
Inna, who’s no stranger to dining room redos, wanted to give these homeowners an upgrade. “They wanted a beautiful dining room to enjoy meals in and more functional furniture to make better use of the space,” Inna says, especially since they walk through it to get to the family laundry room.
First up, she removed the old floors, which were uneven; the replacement wood is a mid-tone brown shade that feels timeless. Then, Inna added picture-frame moulding to the walls, which she painted with fresh white paint (Sherwin-Williams’s Snowbound). While the project takes plenty of patient measuring and some work with a miter saw, it’s one that intrepid DIYers can copy at home for an elegant vintage look. (Another option: clever taping and painting to mimic the look tool-free.)
Inna replaced the old light fixture for one with a pretty gold finish; five lights instead of the old three make the room lots brighter.
Another easy swap? Raising the curtain rod over the window, which makes the ceilings look way higher. The new long curtains in dusty blue look way more glamorous than the old Roman shades.
The new round dining table makes better use of the space available, and means that it’s easier to squeeze a couple chairs around when needed. “It’s giving enough clearance for the walkway into the laundry room right behind it without making the room feel too tight or crowded,” Inna says.
Inna also added a couple special touches, including a large statement mirror and a vintage-looking door. Keeping wall decor to a minimum helps show off all that gorgeous molding.
“My favorite part is the juxtaposition of styles, namely the traditional walls and mirror paired with the modern dining table,” Inna says. “It feels so elegant and fresh!”
