As someone who reviews food products for a living, I’m always looking for hidden gems on the grocery store shelves. So when I was visiting Austin, TX (and hitting every grocer in town) and noticed these bold, black canned beverages with eye-catching graphics and a gothic-like typestyle that read “Murder Your Thirst” and “Death to Plastic,” I was intrigued. Was it beer? Was it seltzer? No, a closer look told me it was actually natural mountain water called Liquid Death — and after chugging an entire 16-oz. can, I realized that it’s genius.

The clever branding and packaging might have been what initially caught my eye, but the product definitely delivers. So what makes this water in a can so special? First, aluminum keeps water cold, which is a lifesaver when I wake up in a hot sweat (or with an unfortunate hangover) and reach for it next to my bed. The water itself comes from the Alps (ooh la la) and tastes way better than what comes out of the tap in my city apartment. The pleasing mouthfeel and overall refreshing taste make the water, dare I say, craveable. Now, something as mundane as drinking water feels incredibly satisfying — and I couldn’t be happier about it.

For the record, I used to carry a reusable water bottle with me whenever I left the house, but after losing one too many, I had to succumb to single-use plastic bottles… or so I thought. With Liquid Death, I can bring water with me on the go, not worry about losing a pricey item, and relieve my guilt about being environmentally irresponsible (aluminum is infinitely recyclable). Another plus: Since it can’t be resealed, I always end up finishing the entire can when I’m on the go. I’ll easily down 16 ounces after yoga class, and I always have it handy on the counter when I meal prep for clients. The can is designed like a tallboy of beer, and there are even videos of people chugging it all over social media. I didn’t realize that Liquid Death had such a cult following, but I totally understand the obsession.

If you’re worried that Liquid Death will taste metallic, I promise it doesn’t (trust me, I hate that tinny taste, too). The 100 percent pure mountain water is fantastic, and the packaging is not only fun, it actually makes me drink more water. I’m never going back to single-use plastic again.
