If life handed you lemons, how would you squeeze them? Are you like me and had never even considered that your method wasn’t the fastest or most efficient?

When it comes to juicing a lemon, I was under the impression that I had it down: Slice it in half, squeeze that sucker in one hand, and boom! Watch the juice pour out. It never occurred to me that there could be a simpler way. But as I spend more time in the kitchen, I have grown to really appreciate a good alternative method — especially if it saves time and effort. Which is why when I came across Josh Elkin‘s unique lemon juicing hack, I thought to myself, “Alright, I’ll bite.”

The “X” Marks the Spot Lemon Juicing Hack

Begin by making an incision with a knife in the shape of an “X” at one end of the lemon. Then, hold it over a bowl and squirt it, as if the “X” was a nozzle. You will need to give it a good squeeze to get every drop out, but having the whole lemon to squeeze — versus just a half — helps a lot. Additionally, the deeper you make the incision, the better the juice seems to flow.

My Take on the “X” Marks the Spot Lemon Juicing Hack

Going in, I was fully unaware of the effectiveness of this hack, and will admit that I was very skeptical of its success. Although I just might opt to juice a lemon the same way I always have, this turned out to be a decent alternative. I can’t say that much time was saved using this method, because in the end I wasn’t confident that I had gotten all the juice out. That being said, it seemed to help the process a bit by massaging the lemon before squeezing, and even the use of two hands helped to get those final drops out. All in all, however, I would say this method does work and it is a pretty clean way of juicing a lemon.
