I Tried Kris Jenner’s “Famous” Six-Layer Dip, and It’s the Best I’ve Ever Had (It Won’t Last 5 Minutes!)

Whether you love them or love to hate them, you can’t deny the Kardashian family knows how to throw a party. Their parties are glitzy, glamorous, and truly one-of-a-kind. While we’ll probably never get to experience one of their over-the-top parties, we can get a small taste via Kris Jenner’s “famous” layered dip that she always brings to large gatherings. It’s basically a seven layer dip less the refried beans layer or, as I like to call it, a six layer dip à la Kris. So, let’s break open a bag of chips and pretend we’re off to a Kardashian-Jenner soirée!

How to Make Kris Jenner’s Famous Layered Dip

In a large bowl, mash eight avocados until smooth and stir in the salsa, garlic salt, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper. Using a small rubber spatula or spoon, level out the avocado mixture and squeeze half a lemon over it. Next, spread the sour cream over the avocado, making sure it’s an even layer. Sprinkle the grated cheese atop and then place the sliced olives around the perimeter of the dish. Add the diced tomatoes inside of the ring of olives, leaving room for the chopped green onions in the center. The dip is best served immediately, although you can store it covered in the refrigerator for a few hours.

My Honest Review of Kris Jenner’s Famous Layered Dip

After assembling the dip, I intended to only take a couple of bites, just enough to formulate an opinion and share my thoughts with you. But, after a few minutes of non-stop bargaining with myself for “just one more bite,” temptation got the best of me. How could it not? Jenner’s layer dip has it all: creaminess from the avocado and sour cream, saltiness from the olives and sharp cheddar, and a bit of tang from the salsa and tomatoes. 

Jenner has some real pro tips in her recipe. I love that she recommends removing excess liquid from the tomatoes and olives; this made the layers hold together much better and prevented any wateriness. That being said, I did find the ingredient measurements to be a little off. Most notably, the recipe calls for eight avocados, which I found to be too much. Halving the amount of avocados would help us have a more proportionate layer. Next, I noticed that the recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups, or six ounces, of sour cream, but those two measurements don’t equate. I used 1 1/2 cups, which translates to about 12 ounces, and found that to be the right amount.

All in all, I thought it was a delicious party app that I would absolutely make again. It is such an easy recipe and great for feeding a large crowd — would be perfect for the game day!

Tips for Making the Layer Dip

  • Use fewer avocados. Since all avocados are different sizes, use your best judgment on how many to use. If you want even layers, I would recommend about four large avocados. 
  • Grate your cheddar. The better your ingredients, the better your layer dip will turn out. Pre-grated cheddar typically has anti-caking agents and a less desirable texture. True, grating your cheese takes extra time, but I promise it’s worth the two minutes.
  • Separate the avocado and salsa. In Jenner’s recipe, she mixes the salsa in with the avocado layer. I didn’t love the color —  it turned from a bright green to an unattractive olive green — so next time I would pour the salsa on top of the lemon and avocado.
