Have you ever wished you had an extra pair of hands while cooking to flip the pages of your cookbook, set a timer, look up how long the chicken should roast, or read the next step in your recipe? Well, starting today, you can, thanks to a new set of features from Amazon on Amazon Echo devices — and a new Kitchn relationship with Amazon.

Today, Amazon is launching a new feature that enables you to cook with Alexa on Echo Show and Echo Spot. This is a deeper, more intuitive integration with these smart home devices — to get started, just say “Alexa, let’s start cooking.”

For instance, you can ask Alexa: “Give me a steak recipe,” (and of course append “please,” as my 2-year-old always does). Alexa will present options, and once you’ve chosen one, simply say, “Alexa, let’s start cooking,” and Alexa will read out the recipe one step at a time with directions and ingredient amounts on the screen for each step. If you have the Echo Show and there is an available video, you will see this play as well.

Basically, it’s the second pair of hands you didn’t even know you needed in the kitchen. As one of a short list of selected recipe publications available at launch, your favorite Kitchn recipes are there, ready for you to listen, follow, and enjoy.

I’m relatively new to the world of voice devices, but as I’ve explored cooking with this technology I’ve discovered so many ways to make mealtime just a little bit easier and faster. All of us here at Kitchn have that as our mission every day as well, looking for ways to create a more intimate experience with you, our readers, searching out what you want and need for better, more joyful eating. We’re excited to be in this new space with you and hope to see you right there in the kitchen. All you have to do is ask (out loud!).
