A home cook is nothing without her tools. That’s how the saying goes, right? We’re pretty sure it is! That’s why we spent so much time and effort in 2019 testing and reporting on the very best kitchen gear. (And why we’ll probably spend even MORE time testing and writing about gear in 2020!)

One of the ways we report on the best of the best? The Best List, which takes a deep-dive look into one specific type of tool and usually runs once a week. We have VERY strong opinions when it comes to these. So, to get the year started, we thought we’d take a look back at our most popular Best Lists from 2019.

1. Air Fryers

Of course Kitchn readers wanted to know which air fryer was the best — we haven’t seen a trendier small appliance come out since the Instant Pot. Our gear pro tested nearly every single air fryer to hit the market and picked four great ones, based on various needs.

4. Frying Pans

Of all the cookware out there, the frying pan (aka frypan or skillet, but not to be confused with a sauté pan) is probably the hardest-working piece of cookware in any kitchen. In this post, we go over the best cast iron skillet, the best stainless steel skillet, the best nonstick skillet, and more.

5. Japanese-Style Knives

We noticed that our readers were super-curious about Japanese-style knives, so we thought it was high-time to cover the very best ones. Our top pick is very similar in shape and size to Western-style chef’s knives — it’s just lighter and has a thinner, sharper blade.

7. Food Storage Containers

We leaned in REAL HARD on meal prep this year. If you can’t say the same, maybe 2020 will be your year? (Because meal prep will save you time and money!) You’ll just need a few good storage containers to hold all the great stuff you make.

8. Egg Cookers

Back in September, we ran a Skills Battle, in which we tested seven different methods for making hard-boiled eggs and wrote about the results for each one. Ultimately, the boil-then-simmer method won out, earning a perfect score of 10/10, but good gosh did we get letters from you guys! Turns out, LOTS of Kitchn readers prefer to use an electric egg cooker. So we got to work researching and testing all the gadgets that can help you make a hard-boiled egg.
