As much as I love breezy springtime strolls filled with my neighborhood’s newest blooms and a glimpse of what my favorite flower shop has on sale, there’s something special about bringing the beauty of spring inside. I’m a huge fan of fresh cut flowers, but I’m always on the lookout for more ways to bring greenery into my home (that’s already filled with live plants). Of course, my latest inspiration comes from none other than TikTok.

The idea is simple enough: If you have a window in your kitchen (or elsewhere in your home that gets lots of lovely sunshine), you can make a DIY herb garden that will look stunning, and hopefully even grows some yummy herbs

You can buy your own acrylic or wooden shelves and install them over your windows, or you could try your hand at one of these smart DIY solutions. Then, simply line your shelves with potted plants, flowers, or herbs of your choice.

There are seemingly infinite ways you could customize your kitchen herb garden — like if you have lots of space, you might try this aquarium style; keep them in jars on your counter if you have a tiny kitchen like me; or hang them vertically or horizontally for a leafy, spacious look. Or, for renters, attach small pots to your wall with Command strips, like it’s done here.

Although you can really grow anything in your new window garden, herbs are a delightful way to add flavor to your food and pleasant scents to your kitchen — plus, early spring is the perfect time to start growing them. And did we mention they’re super cute?

We recommend starting with these no-fail herbs for beginner gardeners that are as delicious as they are easy to grow. Basil is also an easy, chemical-free way to keep pests away if you have a bright window in your kitchen.
