This Stunning Under-$100 Kitchen Makeover Was Done in Just 5 Days
Dramatic ceilings can definitely make a room feel one-of-a-kind — even if everything else stays the same. (If you’re skeptical, here are 10 beautiful ceilings from real homes featured on Apartment Therapy to prove it!)
Although special ceiling treatments are most often seen in entryways, living rooms, and bedrooms, kitchens can be great opportunities to add a statement ceiling, too. Artist Jasmin Pannu proves that in this kitchen spruce-up she did for a client. “The space was well-done, but my client felt it was missing something to make it feel warm, welcoming, and beautiful,” Jasmin explains, adding that the mural cost under $100 and filled the kitchen in this “forever home” with personality.
The floral inside matches the scenic outside.
One of the client’s favorite spots in her home is her balcony, which connects to the kitchen. She was excited to bring a bit of foliage from that area to the inside of her home, too.
“I consulted with my client and went shopping with her for paint colors that took notes from her existing furniture, artwork, and space,” Jasmin explains. The pair landed on several sample-sized paints in blues and greens including Benjamin Moore’s Celtic Folklore, Grenada Green, Blue Belle Island, and Surf City.
If you’re painting a mural, preparation is key.
Jasmin has several pieces of advice for those looking to create a similar project. First, cover every surface of the room before you begin. (Jasmin and her client tag-teamed this.) Second, buy chalk to create outlines of where you want your shapes to go — this will cost you less than $5 and pay off big-time, Jasmine says. Third, choose matte paint for ceiling murals. And fourth, take lots of stretch breaks.
In total, the project took five days and completely transformed the kitchen. It draws the eye upward, making the space feel taller, and overlaps a bit onto the sides to make the soffit on the right hand side of the kitchen look seamless with the ceiling. Best yet, the homeowner and her friends and family love it.
