Froot Loops are coming out with a new flavor for the first time in a decade, and I am not a fan of this change. I always thought I was an avid proponent of progress, innovation, and evolution in all endeavors, but apparently that does not apply to breakfast cereal. I took one look at Kellogg's new Wild Berry Froot Loops and said out loud, "I am very upset about this!"

Kellogg's Froot Loops have not changed in 10 years. But now with the launch of the new Wild Berry Froot Loops, they don't just have a new flavor — they also have a new shape. And that shape is not a loop! Now left is right, up is down, and everything has gone topsy-turvy.

According to a press release, Wild Berry Froot Loops are coming out this summer, and they have a "tangy and sweet berry flavor." Not only have they jettisoned the yellow loops in favor of blue ones, but the purple loops have also been replaced by purple stars.

I'm finding this extremely jarring on a semantic level. Froot Loops are called "loops" because of their iconic ring shape. Is a Froot Loop still a Froot Loop if it's a star? No, now it's a fruit star. Sorry, "Froot" star.

A star is not a loop! I realize this is a pretty weird point to be arguing when we're talking about a brand that spells "fruit" with two Os, but words mean things! And apparently this is a hill I am willing to die on. (No one is more surprised than me.)

In retrospect, this is not the first time I have been in a fight with a breakfast cereal. Lucky Charms added red balloon-shaped marshmallows in 1989, and I'm still salty about it.

Fortunately for any breakfast purists currently quaking in their boots over the prospect of their cereal looking different, the original Froot Loops will still be available in their old familiar all-loops form. For people who want their cereal more berry-flavored and star-spangled, the new Wild Berry Froot Loops will be available this summer for between $4.69 and $5.79.

Will you try the new Wild Berry Froot Loops?
