If you’re like me, you happily accept any reason to indulge in chocolate. So when Joy Bauer shared that the best way to fight fatigue is with her chocolate energy muffins, I needed no convincing.

According to Bauer, the muffins are packed with plenty of nutrients along with rich flavor. Each one provides 7 grams of protein and 2 grams of dietary fiber, a perfect combination for sustained energy. She adds a little espresso for that all-important jolt of caffeine and the bonus of a light mocha flavor.

The muffins’ sweetness comes from your choice of applesauce, mashed bananas, or puréed pumpkin — plus a touch of maple syrup. Of course your body will wake up for this deliciousness!

You’ll find the complete recipe for Bauer’s chocolate energy muffins here. Although it only takes 30 minutes (including 10 minutes of prep time) to make them, the good news is that the muffins can stay in the freezer for three months so you’ll always have a batch on hand when you need a boost.

If you could still use an extra shot of caffeine, check out Bauer’s mocha frappe recipe. Then, once you’re wide awake and raring to go, you may want to get started on the eight things productive people do every single morning.
