There’s a New Documentary About José Andres, and It Looks So Good
Years ago, chef José Andres was known for running destination restaurants all over the world. And while he’s still a global presence, his focus has undoubtedly shifted a bit. These days, he heads a humanitarian organization called World Central Kitchen. WCK aims to feed people in crisis, with their efforts currently being focused on Ukrainian refugees.
Beginning later this month, you can take a deeper look inside Andres’ mission to nourish the world with a new documentary airing on Disney+. We Feed People was created and produced by National Geographic Documentary Films.
In a trailer released earlier this week, it’s clear that this is not your average documentary — thanks in large part to director Ron Howard’s vision. In an interview with People, Andres explained that he immediately trusted Howard with the project, because of the director’s keen storytelling ability. “[Other directors] wanted to do a reality show, it seems to me, of the drama, of the suffering. But me, I’m more in the business of empowering people,” said Andres, adding that Howard is a “beautiful story whisperer,” and a “man that listens.”
In addition to National Geographic’s high-quality visuals, the documentary contains tons of grassroots footage shot by volunteers. The inclusion of this is key to what makes the film so special — and what helps World Central Kitchen thrive. Volunteers have been helping propel and tell the story of this philanthropic mission on social media for 12 years, and it’s no doubt a factor in the organization’s growth.
I found myself tearing up midway through the trailer, and now I can’t wait to watch the whole thing. You can, too, starting May 27 on Disney+. In the meantime, however, check out the trailer below.
