Update: The ice cream is now available in stores and online!

When you’re president, you can have exactly the kind of ice cream you want. Or at least that’s the lesson we’ve learned from the new Joe Biden-inspired ice cream coming out this week from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Biden, whose proclivity for the frozen dessert has been well-documented over the many years of his campaigns, has developed a taste for the much-loved Columbus ice cream shop. But when he first stopped by the flagship Ohio shop back in 2012 — so goes the legend, at least — owner Jeni Britton Bauer told him he was “in the wrong place” for his favorite flavor, chocolate chip.

The then vice president settled for a combination of vanilla and dark chocolate scoops, and it was the beginning of a special connection to the ice cream shop. Ice cream fans, Ohioans, and food-lovers have long hailed Jeni’s uniquely eggless ice creams (this 2008 piece covers the technique) as some of the best in the country. Over the years, the Kitchn has stopped by to check out just how they’re made, raved about Jeni’s cookbook, and

interviewed Jeni herself about her own favorite ice cream flavor

Veep, has professed her love of the specialty sweet stuff.

Biden’s love for Jeni’s was shown throughout his campaign this past year, too. He apparently spent $10,000 dollars on Jeni’s ice cream as gifts for campaign donors, and also used the pints as fuel (“performance enhancers”) for debate prep.

So, with Biden’s imminent inauguration, Jeni decided to do something nice for her famous friend: create the ice cream he first requested. Capitalizing on the excitement of Biden’s inauguration, Jeni’s isn’t limiting the audience for the new flavor to the newly-elected president: starting on January 8th online and in Jeni’s  stores on January 14th, customers can order White House Chocolate Chip, a vanilla ice cream with chocolate flakes and chocolate-covered pieces of waffle cone.
