There are so many trendy appliances on the market right now, from the Instant Pot to the KitchenAid stand mixer — and many of them are investments. If you’re having trouble deciding which one you need the most, you’ll want to thank Joanna Gaines because she just revealed the appliance she thinks every home cook should own: a bread maker.

Her answer might surprise you, but she has a good reason: As Gaines herself has admitted, baking bread can be “overwhelming” for amateur cooks. A bread maker makes the whole process so much less intimidating. And who doesn’t love a hot loaf of bread with a little melted butter spread on top?

As Cooking Light reports, Gaines recommends trying out the Breville Custom Bread Maker. However labor-intensive you might think bread-making is, Gaines promises in her own bread recipe that once the dough is finished, you can place it in the bread maker and go about the rest of your day without a worry. And before you ask, the dough itself only takes three — yes, that’s right, just three — minutes to make.

The Breville Custom Bread Maker doesn’t make bread that is one-size-fits-all: With 13 different settings (including one that lets you make bread with fruit and nuts), you can set what crust color and size you want the final loaf to have. It also includes 46 recipe settings, so you can choose from a variety of bread styles, including whole-wheat, sweet, crusty, and perhaps most exciting of all, gluten-free. That might be tempting for the more health-conscious among us.

At $249, the Breville bread maker might take a chunk out of your budget, but if you’re looking to learn some new skills in the new year, then this might be your opportunity to treat yourself. When Joanna Gaines says we need something for our kitchens, we all listen.
