Italian Police Prevent a Massive Wine Counterfeit

Brunello fans, you should be sending your regards to the Italian authorities. Last week, they stopped a winemaker from passing off lower quality red as the wine of the region.

The winemaker in question had gotten access to counterfeit wine labels and had been able to supply forged documentation for the wine.

Had the he not been caught, this winemaker would have pulled off one of the biggest cons in history. The authorities prevented nearly 160,000 liters (which would have sold for $6.45 million) from entering the market.

We'll be toasting the bust with a glass of the real Brunello di Montalcino tonight.
