A few weeks ago felieats shared a viral TikTok video claiming that she eats a lot of butter, and the best one she’s had (so far) is from Belgium. It’s layered with flaky sea salt and costs $4 at Whole Foods, according to the video. Unsurprisingly, people had opinions about it and shared many of them in the comments section, including recommendations for another, even better (and more expensive) butter from France: Isigny Ste Mère Beurre d’Isigny.

After trying both, felieats says, Isigny “is creamier, more luscious, and richer in depth.” She then confirms that, yes, this butter is, in fact, better, but also high in price (It’s $6.29 in the video). Of course, I had to try this new new favorite butter. After several failed attempts (it was sold out at the three closest Whole Foods), I finally found the butter at a corner mart in a nearby neighborhood. I picked up a loaf of sourdough on my way home so I could sample the butter straightaway.

What You Should Know About Isigny Ste Mère Beurre d’Isigny

Isigny Ste Mère Beurre d’Isigny is a salted butter made in the Normandy region in France. It’s a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) butter, which means that it must be made in that region using traditional methods and ingredients — similar to Champagne. Those ingredients are minimal: pasteurized cow’s milk, salt, and lactic starters is what you’ll find on the ingredients list of this butter.

In addition to the blocks, the company also makes smaller-sized packages, as well as churned, organic, unsalted, and a pastrymaking butter that comes in flattened form. You can find it at Whole Foods for $6.99 (when in stock) or slightly more online.

My Honest Review of Isigny Ste Mère Beurre d’Isigny

As someone who loves wrapping gifts, I’m enamored with the presentation of this butter. The soft-yellow hued foil and its folded corners emanate luxury. You know this butter is going to cost you. The cardboard sleeve is a bit excessive, albeit necessary for those of us who can’t read French. (The ingredients, nutrition facts, etc. are printed on the back in English.)

Beyond the ornate packaging, what’s inside was equally as impressive. It’s so smooth, it should be referred to as buttah. I took it out of the fridge and set it out on the counter for — at most — five minutes, and it spread easily on the sliced sourdough. I ended up slathering on a generous amount, which I’m not at all mad about.

Felieats review is spot-on; this butter is creamy, luscious, and rich. Taste-wise, I’d also add how well the salt flakes balance out the sweet cream of the milk. It’s pure decadence — the most amazing piece of buttered bread I’ve ever had (so far).
