Is Walmart Open on Labor Day?

Labor Day is fast approaching, which means that the summer is nearly over, but not before a celebratory three-day weekend filled with parties, barbecues, and lots of family and friends. After all, who says the end of summer has to be a bummer?

If hosting a big Labor Day bash is on your calendar for the holiday weekend, chances are you have a to-do list that is a mile long. In between getting your home into tip-top shape for guests, dusting off the patio furniture, and putting together a delectable menu, you’ve definitely got your hands full. 

Even the best-laid plans present unexpected last-minute surprises, so while there’s no doubt you meticulously checked off every item on your grocery list, you are bound to need to pick up a thing or two at the store on Labor Day. When that happens, where is a host to go? If Walmart is your go-to grocer, you might find yourself asking, “Is Walmart open on Labor Day?” Fortunately, we’re one step ahead of you and have the answers you need ahead of the holiday.

This year, Labor Day will be celebrated on Monday, September 4. Labor Day is a federal holiday that was first established more than 140 years ago to honor the American labor movement. Each year we observe Labor Day out of respect to all of the hard work, countless contributions, and achievements that have been made by laborers throughout our country’s history. The holiday is always celebrated the first Monday in September, making the weekend that precedes it a three-day weekend. 

While many retailers and grocery stores have limited hours or are closed entirely on Labor Day this year, Walmart will be operating during its normal business hours. If you need some last-minute hot dog buns or mustard, Walmart will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (although the pharmacy may have shorter hours). Better still, Walmart.com is open around the clock, so you can place orders for everything from watermelon to waterproof outdoor furniture anytime you want in advance of the holiday weekend. 

Don’t live near a Walmart location? Don’t worry! There are plenty of other grocery stores that will be open on Labor Day just in case you run out of mayonnaise or need an extra pair of grilling tongs.
