Indian Summer Refreshment: The Sidewalker

Indian Summer Refreshment: The Sidewalker

The calendar says it is early November, but the weather outside is relentlessly sunny, with temperatures in the upper 70s. Luckily I've found the perfect drink to get me through this conflicting season. Mixing apple brandy, wheat beer, maple syrup and apple cider vinegar, the Sidewalker is full-bodied, yet crisp and refreshing, just the thing to sip during Indian summer evenings.

Gilt Taste shared the recipe for this drink, which comes from Prime Meats in Brooklyn. If you like wheat beers like Hefeweizen, you will probably be a fan of the Sidewalker, as the fruity flavor of the beer shines through. After my first sip, I thought, "Huh. It tastes like Hefeweizen," but then I realized the beer is rounded out by the apple brandy, with bright pops of lemon juice and apple cider vinegar balanced with the sweetness of maple syrup. Using vinegar in a cocktail might sound odd, but it adds a pleasant sourness that is refreshing.

Beer cocktails have become a staple in my household this year, with Campari and IPAs being my official drink of Summer 2011, and I'm pleased to have found an autumnal beer cocktail to see me through the season.
