Many of the celebrity Instagram videos during this pandemic tend to seem a bit out of touch as the celebs complain from the comfort of their giant bathtubs and sprawling lawns, but as always, Ina Garten remains the queen of our kitchens with a video that is exactly what we need. “It’s important to keep up traditions,” the Barefoot Contessa explains, and that includes cocktail hour.

Looking casual and comfortable, joking around with the camera, and seeming generally just like what you would imagine her to be like away from the magic of television production, Ina demonstrates how to make a giant pitcher of Cosmopolitans. “You never know who will stop by,” she says, then pauses… “wait, no one is stopping by,” she corrects, free-pouring two cups of vodka, a cup of Cointreau, and one of cranberry juice cocktail. When she gets to the lime juice, her inner perfectionist comes out, reminding watchers that even in a pandemic, you still have to use freshly squeezed lime juice.

Then it gets really good: she produces a giant cocktail shaker half-filled with ice in order to pour in about half of the pitcherful of drink. “You have to shake it for thirty seconds,” she instructs, then adds, “You have lots of time, it’s not a problem.”

Seeing Ina at ease and making jokes is about as heartwarming as content gets, and she’s full of her usual helpful hints, all adapted to these times: “During a crisis, cocktail hour can be almost any hour.” Then she sends it over the top, saying, “The last detail is really important — a good martini glass. I’ll show you the one I like” as she produces what might be the world’s largest martini glass and proceeds to pour the entire contents of the shaker in. In her words, “Stay safe, have a good time, and don’t forget the cocktails.”
