If Your Coffee Tastes More Bitter Than Normal, it Might Be the Color of Your Mug

If you reach in the cupboard to grab just any old mug in the morning, you might want to think twice tomorrow.

Researchers in Australia have discovered that the color of your coffee mug can affect just how bitter your coffee tastes. Which mug do you think makes it most bitter?

Turns out, it’s white! The researchers looked at white, transparent, and blue coffee mugs to see which made the coffee taste most bitter, and white won out.

Why? Because of the contrast between the white and the brown. Our brains associate the color brown with bitterness, so a white mug that makes your coffee appear browner will also make it taste more bitter. (Time to invest in some clear glass mugs!)
