Summer is the perfect season for ice cream. With warmer weather, there’s nothing better than a cool, refreshing, sweet treat. But before you dig into that pint or get ready to scoop some out for an ice cream sundae, you may want to double-check the products you have in your freezer.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a nationwide recall on ice cream due to fear of potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall is affecting more than 60 products sold under Totally Cool of Owings Mills, Maryland, impacting the following brands: Friendly’s, Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery, Hershey’s Ice Cream, Yelloh, Jeni’s (ice cream sandwiches), Cumberland Farms, The Frozen Farmer, Marco, ChipWich, AMAFruits, Taharka, Dolcezza Gelato, and LaSalle.

The products sold at retailers nationwide include ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes, ice cream cones, sundaes, cookies, pints, tubs, and more. While not all products sold under these brands have been compromised, it’s better to be safe. A complete list of all the products affected can be found here

Listeria is serious and has potentially fatal consequences. The bacteria can cause listeriosis, a possible deadly infection. Symptoms and seriousness of the infection varies. For people that are healthy, you may experience fever, headache, diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain. However, young children, elderly, and those with weaker immune systems may experience far worse symptoms and greater complications. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. According to the FDA, no illnesses have been reported yet, and Totally Cool has ceased production on all products.

If you believe you have any of these products, the FDA urges you not to eat them and instead return them for a full refund. You can also call Totally Cool with any additional questions at 410-363-7801 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. Or you can email the company at regulatory@totallycoolicecream.com.
