This $10 Salad Chopper Is Constantly Selling Out — Here’s My Honest Review
I love salads. They’re hands-down my favorite meal — I even eat them for breakfast. I’m a culinary school grad and have been cooking professionally for years, so I thought I knew every salad-making trick in the book. But after seeing this TikTok video about a salad chopper that you apparently “need” if you like salad, I was intrigued. I’d never seen anything like it and knew I had to try it for myself.

The Chef’n SaladShears Lettuce Chopper retails for $10 on Amazon and is made from nylon serrated “blades” with a rubber grip handle. The name says it all: This circular tool uses a shearing motion to chop up lettuce and tender greens. I ordered one with Amazon Prime shortly after watching the video, and learned that its popularity is real: I waited over a full week to receive mine.
I’ll admit that when I opened the package, my first thought was, That’s it? It seems like such a simple tool that I was skeptical it would work any better than my favorite chef’s knife. To put it to the test, I chopped a few heads of red leaf lettuce using two different scenarios: First on a cutting board and second in a mixing bowl (the packaging touted its versatility in both situations).
The cutting board test went great. When I pressed down on the top of the shears, they gently rocked back and forth, using their serrated blades to slice through the lettuce. There is a surprising amount of power behind the shearing motion, and the greens were transformed into cleanly bite-sized pieces in fewer than 10 passes. It’s definitely worth noting that I didn’t have to go back and re-chop any pieces (something I regularly do with my not-always-sharp knives).
I was less impressed by how the SaladShears performed in my mixing bowl. I used a 9-inch wide bowl, which is my favorite size for mixing salads; it’s pretty generously sized. However, there just wasn’t enough room for the chopper to adequately slice through the large lettuce leaves. It did a moderately good job, but many of the leaves were half-chopped, and the multiple chops were starting to “bruise” them, too. I did appreciate that the plastic blade meant the shears were safe to use in my ceramic bowl — that’s something I could never do with a traditional knife.
Overall, I think these work best as a traditional “chopper” on a large, flat surface like a cutting board. They’ll do a decent job at mixing up all of your salad ingredients in the bowl if they’re already bite-sized. Are the SaladShears worth the $10? I’ve already placed them next to my most-used knives rather than tucked away in a drawer. As someone who eats a lot of lettuce, I’d say yes!
