Despite the current real estate market (which tends to favor sellers), some houses are still struggling to attract buyers. Lyndsay Lamb and Leslie Davis, the twin sisters behind HGTV’s “Unsellable Houses,” have spent the majority of their careers turning “unsellable” homes into must-have properties. Time after time, there has been one simple update that Lamb and Davis swear by when getting ready to list a house on the market: paint all of the walls and trim.

“When people live in a home for five, 10, 20, 30 years, they accumulate a lot of wall stuff and they don’t realize how dinged-up the walls can get,” Lamb said during a recent interview with Apartment Therapy. “So by painting the walls, you take everything off, you get a really fresh coat of brightness, and everything else.”

The idea is that homeowners will have the chance to really take stock of all of their wall decorations and decide what truly needs to go back up and what can be packed up, according to the twins. “You’re getting that move-in ready, fresh look and you’re not going to over-clutter your walls again,” Lamb added.

Throughout the series, when the sisters have homeowners repaint, they lean towards more neutral colors. Lamb recommended Spare White (SW 6203) by Sherwin-Williams as one of her current go-tos. “If I have to just pick a color off the top of my head and feel confident that it’s going to work, I’ll do the Spare White on the walls, I’ll do just a white ceiling, and a bright white trim,” she said.

The shade is ideal for homeowners who want one consistent color throughout the house, even if each room has slightly different light in it. According to Lamb, Spare White can bring a warmer, gray tone into darker rooms and a lighter, whiter gray tone into light rooms. “It really works well in any space and any light,” she added.

“Unsellable Houses” airs Tuesdays at 9/8 central on HGTV and Discovery+.
