Alton Brown Has a Clever Trick for Making the Best Brownies Ever

Everyone loves a BOGO — especially when it comes to decadent desserts. And thanks to Sarah Fennel over at @bromabakery, we can easily create a one-two punch of chocolatey goodness in the kitchen.

Teasing her Hot Cocoa Brownies to her 592,000 instagram followers (with the full recipe here on her Broma Bakery blog), Fennel showcased an exercise in multitasking that results in delicious brownies with hot cocoa mix blended right in. Finished off with a sumptuous chocolate buttercream and mini marshmallows, they’re a fudgy delight that are quick to make and just as fast to disappear. One commenter noted that they made these brownies around Christmastime, and they barely lasted two hours.

While most of the ingredients live in your pantry and fridge (hello, eggs, butter, granulated and powdered sugars, milk, and flour), she notes that the devil is in the delicious details. Translation: the quality of your cocoa mix, chocolate, and vanilla extract can really make or break your homemade brownies. She uses Cocoa Classics Chocolate Supreme Hot Cocoa, but you can choose whatever happens to be your favorite.

Another pro tip? When it comes to brownies, there’s a fine line between baked and burnt. Fennel suggests taking out the hot cocoa brownies when a knife inserted near the edge comes out clean, but a knife inserted into the middle comes out a little gooey. “The brownies will continue to cook as they cool, and you’ll be left with that perfect combo of gooey center and a crisp, crunchy edge.” she writes on her blog.

On the off chance you have leftovers (but really, why would you?), store them in the fridge for up to a week. And if you want to keep your chocolate treats separate, try these fudgy coffee brownies and this hot cocoa.
