Host an Old-Fashioned Vacation Slideshow Before Summer Ends

Chances are that the closest you came to a vacation this year was streaming some travel comedy from your couch. But you can still end this strange summer feeling like you got a little adventure—and a little safe socializing, too. The solution: Channel your inner ’60s suburban dad and have a backyard vacation slideshow party with your quarantine pod (old-school slides optional). Here’s how.

The Slideshows

This year, vacation pics have a new significance—remember other places? Have everyone in your pod make a slideshow of their favorite trips from years past and recall some memories of the trip to share with the group. (Cloud-based photo-sharing apps makes this super easy.) Remember to sprinkle in some candid shots amongst all that architecture: Landmarks alone can get a little boring. Have everyone email their slideshows, and use a projector or smart TV to display them.

The Spread

Serve food—individually portioned, of course—from one or two destinations being featured. To drink, serve something classic and clean like vodka soda, which will complement any array of dishes. If you’re curious about experimenting with mixology, this basic recipe is the perfect place to start: Just fill a highball glass with ice, add 1.5 parts Absolut® Vodka to 5 parts soda water, and garnish with lime. The Scene

Turn your backyard into a vacation destination: Bring those tropical houseplants outside for some lush color, string Christmas lights around the deck, and play tunes inspired by your slideshow locales. Set up seating at least six feet apart.
