I think we can all agree that it doesn’t take a lot to make a great guacamole. Just a simple blend of mashed avocado, plenty of chopped fresh cilantro, red onion, fresh lime juice, salt and pepper. Add the chips, and perhaps a cold beer or margarita and you’re all set.

This summer, I propose breaking out of your purist shell and expanding your horizons to consider one of these 5 fun add-ins to jazz up your next batch of guac!

1. Fruit

If you love a good sweet-savory blend, this is for you! Try adding grapefruit for a little tang, sweet mango or pineapple, or ripe summer berries. Pomegranate also makes a great guacamole addition!

2. Cheese

If you’ve never tried cheese mixed into your guacamole, now is the time, folks! I was skeptical at first, but whether you use feta, goat cheese, cotija or even gorgonzola, this combo is downright delicious!

3. Bacon

I think this kinda speaks for itself! I mean, bacon makes everything better, right?! So, why not add crumbled, crispy bacon to your next batch of guac!

4. Greens

Greens and veggies aren’t just for salads! Consider shredded kale, green peas or even asparagus as an add-in.

5. Herbs and Spices

Cilantro and avocado are pretty much a match made in heaven. But, with fresh herbs sprouting into season, consider substituting basil, mint, dill or tarragon. Or, spice things up with your favorite curry powder.

What are your favorite guacamole add-ins?
