Because I’m single and only shop for myself, I have learned the hard way just how easy it is to go overboard at Costco. I’ve definitely bought too much and wasted food (and money!) in the process. But I’m proud to say that over the last two years that I’ve been a Costco member, I’ve become more conscious of the bulk-buy purchases I make, and now only grab what I know I’ll realistically be able to eat.

These are the five bulk-sized Costco essentials that help me eat well and actually save me money. They’re all nearly half the price per ounce at Costco compared to other stores, thanks to the way they’re packaged.

A quick note: To keep my shopping trip safe and efficient, I snapped photos quickly of everything that caught my eye and only touched items I planned to purchase.

1. Wild Planet Wild Albacore Tuna

I love to keep cans of wild salmon and tuna on hand because they’re shelf-stable, super-convenient, and require zero time standing over a stove or grill. Wild Planet is my go-to brand for quality and sustainability reasons, and I love that I can buy their tuna at Costco in bulk. You can’t beat the price on these, either — it’s half that of the supermarket price.

2. Sun Date Medjool Dates

Of all the different kinds of Medjool dates I’ve tried, these are by far my favorite. They’re the perfect snack, a great natural sweetener in smoothies, and my favorite ingredient to use when I make raw fruit-and-nut bites. They’re also full of potassium, fiber, magnesium, B vitamins, and plant-based iron.

3. Fage Nonfat Plain Greek Yogurt

I find Fage to be the creamiest nonfat plain Greek yogurt available (and put it into pretty much every smoothie I make), so you’ll rarely see me checking out at Costco without a carton. Nonfat plain Greek yogurt is also one of my favorite sources of protein, vitamin B12, calcium, and potassium.

4. Clovis Farms Organic Frozen Super Smoothie Packs

It amazes me that six servings of high-quality frozen smoothie packs cost just $10. While I sometimes like to make pre-portioned smoothie bags myself if I have time, I love that I can buy these in bulk at Costco. They make mornings so easy.

5. Earthbound Farms Mixed Organic Greens

Earthbound Farms is my go-to brand of organic greens. My favorites are their Power Greens blend (for my morning smoothies) and Spring Mix (for making salads). I usually keep half a container in my fridge and then freeze the rest so it doesn’t go bad. Knowing I have a huge container in the fridge motivates me to eat lots of greens each day before they spoil.
