Over the past year, I have come to notice some drastic changes in my usual habits. Now that I have more time on my hands, I am taking a lot longer to do everything, be it cooking, cleaning, or even just brewing my usual cup of morning coffee. And surprisingly, this newly acquired habit of savoring mundane rituals has also trickled down to my drinking routine. Rather than pop open a bottle of wine, I find myself gravitating more towards making a complex cocktail — but all that sugar and alcohol can quickly add up and lead to a nasty hangover that I end up battling on my couch rather than dancing off at a bar. So when I discovered Haus, a brand that makes low-ABV (alcohol by volume) apéritifs that promise to reduce hangovers while still delivering great flavors, I was thrilled to add their beautiful bottles to my growing bar cart.

For anyone who’s even a little bit confused about apéritifs (I was when I first heard about them), they are simply liquors that are flavored with roots, herbs, and botanicals. Because of their lower alcohol content, apéritifs are easy to sip over a longer period of time without getting too intoxicated or feeling hungover in the morning. Just for reference, Haus’s aperitifs range from 15 to 20 percent ABV, while cocktails with alcohols like brandy, gin, rum, tequila, vodka, and whiskey typically contain 40 percent ABV.

As for the apéritifs themselves, Haus currently offers 10 delicious flavors: Citrus Flower, Peach Passionfruit, Strawberry Basil, Grapefruit Jalapeño, New Fashioned, Pomegranate Rosemary, Spiced Cherry, Lemon Lavender, Ginger Yuzu, and Rose Rosé. While I was sipping Spiced Cherry all winter long, I was excited to switch it up with new flavors for summer. Like the Grapefruit Jalapeño. It’s made using a blend of fresh ingredients like grapefruit, Makrut lime leaves, and pink peppercorns, with a subtle kick of fresh jalapeño. On this sweltering sun-filled days, one glass in and I am already feeling the vibe. It’s the kind of flavor that transports your taste buds to an island getaway when you’re actually just in your apartment.

Plus, right now, Haus is offering a great deal with their Buy More, Save More event. Score between 20 and 30 percent off depending on how many bottles you buy. All the flavors are available and ready to be mixed-and-matched for a delicious discount.

Camey, a fellow Haus fan and director of brand partnerships at Kitchn, has been sipping her Haus apéritifs for a few months now too, and she really loves how “refreshing and soothing” these drinks are. “A huge part of why I love the products is because I feel like the ingredients are so thoughtfully sourced which I believe in turn makes my buzz less hangover prone and all the more FUN,” she adds. Another selling point? Haus apéritifs are made in Sonoma County, California with a base of Chardonnay grapes and high-quality ingredients that are all locally sourced.

Since my previous experience with apéritifs had been sipping on an Aperol or Campari spritz, I was a little confused about how I should be drinking these. Thankfully Haus includes a recipe card with suggestions. You can use everything from tonic to fresh fruit juice to a splash of whiskey to bring out the complex flavors that range from bitter to sweet to floral to spicy. But after a few months of mixing and matching a bunch of different ingredients, I discovered that (for me) the apéritifs work best with sparkling water and a squeeze of fresh lemon or orange juice. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try picking sparkling water flavors that complement those of your apéritif.

However you decide to sip it, I can tell you one thing: you’re guaranteed a good time. And the fact that you don’t have to deal with a nasty hangover? That beats a little paper umbrella and a cover charge any day.
