If there’s one dessert that you think of when it comes to birthdays and celebrations, there’s a good chance it’s cake. A lofty, fluffy, icing-filled layer cake is incredibly customizable and a sweet way to celebrate someone you’re close to.

Something that’s not as pleasant, however, is having to store leftover cake in a too-small, clunky, or smushed food container and completely ruining the frosting and layering of the cake. Most times, you likely have to awkwardly maneuver the slices of cake from your cake plate into a round or rectangular food container whilst trying to not mess up the icing, toppings, or decorations.

Leave it to TikTok, however, to have a simple hack to counteract this small inconvenience. In a video, user Crappy2Happy (who posts a plethora of helpful hacks) demonstrates a way to store a cake that avoids awkwardly slipping slices into a container with high sides and risking a frosting mess: Use the lid as the bottom, or “plate,” for the cake slices. Place two cake wedges together, like pieces of a puzzle, to make sure you’re making the most of all the surface area. Then place the container over the slices like a lid. Store the cake slices this way, with the food container upside-down, in the fridge.

With this technique, you don’t have to work around the raised sides or edges of the food container or worry too much about smearing the frosting. All you need is a reliable food container (preferably one with decent depth) and either a regular spatula or offset spatula to make transferring the slices easier.
