We Need to Discuss the New Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Cones
With spring and summer stretching out ahead of us, it can only mean one thing to me: We’re entering peak ice cream season. This is when I begin swapping heavier, more decadent flavors (think: dark chocolate with fudgy brownie chunks) for light, fruity flavors. (Don’t worry — your standard chocolate and vanilla span all seasons.) It also makes this the perfect time for new flavors and forms to hit freezer cases. And that’s exactly what Häagen-Dazs did with its latest innovation: the Butter Cookie Cone.
What You Should Know About the New Häagen-Dazs Butter Cookie Cones
The cones come in four classic flavors: chocolate, coffee, strawberry, and vanilla. Each one is topped with a mix of sauces, cookie bits, and chocolate curls (except for the coffee butter cookie cone, which swaps curls for roasted almond pieces). But the main feature — and what I really need to discuss — is the cone.
This cone is thick. I did not measure it with a ruler, but just by looking at it (and later biting into it) I could tell it’s at least 50 percent as thick as the traditional store-bought ice cream cones I grew up eating. It’s a “crunchy cookie cone” and is lined with chocolate. It definitely makes for a new ice cream-eating experience.
I went in without any knowledge of the ice cream details — I heard ice cream and I said, “yes.” And as a prolific ice cream tester, I wanted to go in without any preconceived notions and see how I enjoyed it. So that’s what I did.
My Honest Review of the New Häagen-Dazs Butter Cookie Cones
Of the four flavors, I received samples of the chocolate and strawberry flavors and was equally excited to try both! (Coffee and vanilla, I will meet you at a later date.) The ice creams were creamy and indulgent, without feeling heavy. Of the two, the strawberry felt more springy and summery to me, but I would gladly snack on a chocolate cone at the tail end of a warm beach day.
The shavings and toppings added a nice contrast and pops of flavor. The standouts, though, were the cookie crumbs; they’re a nice appetizer before the cone. When I first bit into the cone itself, I was caught off-guard. It was more like eating a cookie than the waffle cones I’m used to, and the more I thought about it (and tried it), the more fun it was.
Just like the classic blue-tin cookies, these are buttery and snappy. It’s like getting the best of both dessert worlds (aka an ice cream sandwich) but in a new vessel! Plus, the chocolate lining! Totally unexpected, and completely necessary. It, combined with the cone’s sturdiness, means melty, drippy leaks are not something your fingers should be concerned about.
The only note I have is the ratio of ice cream to cone was a little skewed, so I would love to see more ice cream scooped into — or on top of — the cones in the future. Now, I’m off to get another cone.
