My Birthday Tradition: A Guinness Cake

My Birthday Tradition: A Guinness Cake

A chalkboard menu hangs prominently in our living room, and if you look closely, you'll notice the remnants of a faint inscription scribbled in large capital letters. GUINNESS CAKE! This cake is a special delight my wife prepares for me every year on my birthday. And it gets better every year — one of those things worthy of its own tradition.

Have you ever bitten into something and realized right then and there that it deserves its own occasion or event? That was the case with me and this rich chocolate cake made with Guinness stout — an unmistakable bittersweet bite. It's made in a bundt cake pan, which provides for extra drama as the dark chocolate ganache spills over the ridges and onto the serving plate.

These days there are too many years to signify individually with a candle, so we just approximate with a few large sparklers for each decade of life. I'm definitely looking forward to more celebrations around this cake, and more moments with the person who makes it for me every year.
