The coronavirus pandemic forced many parts of life as we know it to come to a screeching stop, including the filming of one our most-beloved baking shows to grace the planet: The Great British Bake Off. In the scheme of things, was this all that important? No, not really. But it’s something many people look forward to as a source of comfort and inspiration, so it was sad all the same.

Early on in the pandemic, Love Productions, the production company behind The Great British Bake Off, announced it would indefinitely delay filming its new season due to public health concerns. “We continue to monitor the situation and follow the advice of Public Health England,” a spokesperson for Love told Deadline in March. “[We] will delay filming on Bake Off until it is safe to proceed.”

In the waiting period, many of us have been indulging in past seasons of the show, known in the U.S. as The Great British Baking Show. But now, there are reports that GBBO secretly started filming again, so a new season should be on its way faster than we think. (Yay!)

At a press luncheon last week, Gary Davey, CEO of Sky Studios (which is the parent company of Love Productions), and chief commercial officer Jane Millichip announced that filming for season 11 was at least two weeks underway — of course, with a focus on the health and safety of everyone involved. According to a report in Deadline, contestants, hosts, and judges quarantined leading up to and during the filming of the show, so they could all interact more closely.

While GBBO fans are ecstatic that a new set of bakers are in the kitchen, details about the actual release are still murky. There’s no official release date for the season that’s currently filming, at least for American, but Milichip promised U.K. residents they could enjoy the premiere of season 11 in 2020: “You will have your Victoria sponge this year,” she said at the press luncheon.

Crossing our fingers it comes sooner rather than later!
