What’s a Good Side Dish for Chicken Cacciatore?

Q:  I will be cooking Valentine’s Dinner for a large group of people and I decided to cook chicken cacciatore. For the side, I heard fennel was a good match with chicken so I bought one and tried it but I really didn’t like it.

Do you have any good, refreshing vegetable sides for this chicken dish?

Editor: Julia, as avowed fennel-lovers we hate to see you give up on it so fast! Fennel is indeed an excellent side dish for chicken, especially when the chicken is cooked in a hearty dish like cacciatore. Fennel has to be sliced paper-thin, though, so that its licorice flavor doesn’t overwhelm the palate. Mixed with citrus and other greens it’s very refreshing. Here are a couple favorite recipes:
