While I’d like to think that years of writing for food magazines and working in restaurants forged me into the ultimate home cook, my apartment kitchen is far from perfect. In fact, I’ll let you in on a little secret: I’ve been (shamefully) using the same set of plastic kitchen tools for years now, and while they still work, they’ve been melted, chipped, and worn away so much that it’s a little embarrassing to talk about. When we saw that little bits of plastic were starting to flake off dangerously near our food, my girlfriend and I finally decided enough was enough, and that we needed to get a new set. After scouring the internet (and consulting with some of my fellow editors here at The Kitchn) we settled on the 5-Piece Ultimate Tool Set from GIR, the brand behind the internet-famous “Spoonula,” which many of our editors swear by. (Pro Tip: Use the exclusive promo code AT20 for 20% off sitewide!)

What Is the GIR 5-Piece Ultimate Tool Set?

With a number of stunning colorways, this set of kitchen tools includes a ladle, a Spoonula, a large spoon, a spatula, and a flip. They’re all made from 100% pharmaceutical-grade, platinum-cured silicone that’s BPA-, BPS-, and phthalate-free. They’re also dishwasher-safe, and stain-, odor-, and microbe-resistant. Plus, they’re good up to 425°F, which means you won’t have to worry about melting them on a hot pan. Additionally, GIR offers free standard shipping on orders over $35 (so this qualifies!) with a 30-day free return and exchange policy, so if you’re not satisfied, you can always send it back.

Why I Love the GIR 5-Piece Ultimate Tool Set

There’s really nothing like working with fresh, out-of-the-box kitchen tools, and this set is no exception. Each piece is great on its own, but with the entire set, you’re taken care of for pretty much all your culinary needs. The only other utensils you might need are a set of tongs and a wooden spoon — otherwise, this bundle has everything else covered. There are some details that separate this set from your dollar store basics, though. For example, I never knew I needed measurements on the inside of my ladle, but now, I couldn’t imagine a ladle without them — especially since I’ve been trying to track my macros for the last three months. Having those measurements makes it so easy to portion out rice, liquids, and other ingredients. There’s also a little give in the edge of each tool, and while that might sound like a bad thing, it’s really not, since the softer edges allow you to get into the nooks and crannies of pots and pans with hard edges so there’s no food left behind when you’re stirring or scooping. GIR really thought of everything here.

I’ll admit: I thought the Spoonula was a little hokey at first (the name reminded me of Dracula), but I’m happy to report I’m not totally converted — it’s become my perfect “everything” tool, and I couldn’t imagine using anything else to sauté veggies or stir soups and stews. So if you’re looking for a set of incredibly useful silicone kitchen tools that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with snagging the GIR 5-Piece Ultimate Tool Set, especially while it’s still on sale!
