If you're planning on a New Year's resolution to have your cake and eat it, too (aren't we all), Giada De Laurentiis has a new show on the Food Network that will help inspire you to get in the kitchen and bake a better cake. The show, called Winner Cake All, debuts on Monday, January 7, on Food Network.
In this baking competition series, four bakers will battle it out each week in difficult themed challenges designed to challenge even expert bakers. The themes will take inspiration from television stars, sports, restaurants, and more. The "client" will present what they're looking for in the cake — people like TLC's the Busbys, Guy Fieri (Guy's Grocery Games-themed), Michael Symon (a cake for the opening of his new Las Vegas restaurant), and football star Rashad Jennings (a game-day cake) — and the competitors will put forth their best interpretation.
In the first round of each episode, the bakers will compete in a decoration challenge, creating a unique cake topper that fits the theme. One team will be eliminated. In the second round, the remaining three teams will compete in the cake challenge, to make the sculpted cake. The prize for the winner is $10,000 — judged on how they bring the idea to life, as well as the standard cooking show rubric of flavor and texture.
It sounds a little like what might happen if Nailed It! (which returns with new episodes on December 5), weren't a comedy show — these will be bakers actually capable of making the complicated and intricate cakes and impressive toppers. The cakes will be judged by a rotating panel of judges, including Dan Langan of Baked by Dan, Kimberly Bailey of the Butter End Cakery, Damiano Carrara of Carrara Pastries, and YouTube baking star Yolanka Gampp. And of course, the whole thing will be hosted by Giada.
