The 8 Things You Need to Help Take Care of Your Kitchen Appliances
If I had to guess, I’d say you put your appliances — large and small — through the wringer this last year or so. Maybe you’ve made more coffee than ever before? Or your fridge has never been more stocked? (Or both!) I’m right there with you. And so I’d like to use this moment to make a little PSA to remind you that we need to repay our appliances and give them a bit of TLC from time to time. You know, because you definitely want to keep them all in tip-top shape for as long as possible.
Which brings me to this little list. See, I have a few cleaning staples that I think everyone should have on hand — a few supplies that can help us take care of our appliances. They’re all under $20, too!
1. OXO Good Grips Microfiber Hand Duster
This hand duster is perfect for dusting tight or hard-to-reach spaces, like your range hood, the top of your microwave, and underneath the fridge. It magically fits into all the little spaces you want it to — plus, the microfiber head is machine-washable and the handle is grippy and comfortable.
2. Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets
These dishwashing tablets are the best. They clean the inside of the dishwasher, remove smells, and leave your glassware sparkling. Best of all, they’ll cost you about $6 for six tablets, which is a six-month supply.
3. Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Plastic Scrubbing Pads
These are my favorite scrubbing pads, not only for cleaning cookware, but also appliances. I use them to clean the outside of my electric kettle, which tends to get spattered with grease and oil, thanks to its proximity to the stovetop. I also use them to clean the underside of my oven’s range hood. These pads are tough-yet-gentle and truly are non-scratch.
4. Cafiza Professional Espresso Machine Cleaner
This is a favorite of so many coffee pros — and for good reason. Cleaning your coffee machine is super important because, for starters, a dirty machine can lead to off-tasting coffee. And this (paired with the below!) is just the thing to clean it. Cafiza cleans away the most stubborn coffee residue. I even soak my coffee machine’s carafe, lid, and brew basket in Cafiza, to give them a thorough cleaning and remove any built-up coffee oils.
5. Urnex Dezcal Coffee and Espresso Descaler and Cleaner
Descaler removes the scale — the limescale that builds up from water — inside the coffee machine. Built-up scale can cause the machine to run slower and even stop working. So, yeah, it’s vital! For $15, you get eight packets of descaler.
6. Microfiber Cleaning Cloths
Microfiber cleaning clothes are my favorite way to wipe down surfaces and appliances. I like these in particular because they come in a pack of 12 (for $12!), have held up to many washes, and minimize streaking.
7. Weiman Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish
I have tried a lot of stainless steel cleaners to clean my dishwasher, oven, range hood, and fridge. All of them streak — except for this one. It works the best when used with a microfiber cloth (like, ahem, the ones above).
8. Mr. Clean Magic Erasers
I actually do love to clean, but I hate cleaning the inside of my oven. (I don’t know anyone who likes that chore!) For what it’s worth, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser makes it super easy to clean your oven’s door and it’s pretty mess-free (no sprays or waiting for oven cleaner to work!).
