Food recalls are plaguing the news this week, and ready-to-eat products are the culprits. Just a few days ago, grocery stores had to pull packages of Caesar salads and tacos off their refrigerated shelves. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that people should toss out another convenient pre-cooked staple, too.

Here’s what we know: On October 18, 2024, TreeHouse Foods — a private-label business — known for making all kinds of foods like candy, cookies, and hot cereal for popular brands to sell to the public announced a voluntary recall. They are pulling back certain frozen waffles sold under brand names like Good and Gather, Great Value, and Kodiak Cakes. For more details on specific flavors, UPCs, lot codes, best-by dates, brand names, and box images, take a look at the entire company statement

TreeHouse Foods did not share how the frozen waffles became potentially tainted with Listeria monocytogenes. Still, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the bacteria can spread through many channels. The pesky germs can travel from one food item to another, live on processing equipment, and come into contact with ingredients. The bacteria can even survive and grow in cool temperatures like refrigerators, so taking this recall seriously is essential.

The company urges the public to check their freezers for any potentially tainted packs of waffles immediately. To date, there have been no reports of illness linked to the products, and to keep it that way, you must meticulously scan your kitchen for this recalled food.

So, what’s the big deal with listeria? Well, it turns out that if you come into contact with this bacteria, it can be very harmful. According to the CDC, the symptoms associated with this bacteria may include fever, headache, stiff neck, fatigue, loss of balance, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, and serious infections in pregnant women.

So, if you have any boxes of frozen waffles hanging out in your freezer, don’t take the risk of eating them. It’s not worth it, especially when you can make a batch with just a few simple ingredients at home.
