This Recipe for French Fry Spoons and Homemade Ketchup Will Make for a Fun Treat This Week
As someone immersed in the culinary world, I’m fortunate to see a wide range of smart, creative food items and recipes. From Mexican-style fruit kebabs to tiramisu pancakes, I’m always in awe of — although rarely shocked by — the level of ingenuity I come across. That shifted a bit, however, when I came across Los Angeles-based chef Josh Elkin’s french fry spoons with homemade ketchup recipe.
I was more than surprised, as this is possibly the most unusual recipe I’ve come across to date. I love french fries, so I knew I had to find out how to replicate this fun twist on a classic treat as soon as possible.
To get the spoon shape, you’ll need to use a chocolate mold for spoons. You’ll start by peeling four large Yukon gold potatoes, cut them in half, and then add them to a salted pot of water, bringing to a boil for 15 minutes. Once the potatoes have boiled and you’ve mashed them, in a large bowl, combine the potatoes, corn starch, sugar, and salt.
Mix the ingredients until even in consistency, which you can test by seeing if you can mold it into the shape of a ball. Next, fill each chocolate mold for spoons with the potato mix and scrape any excess mixture off the top of the mold before placing it in the freezer for 10 minutes.
While the mix is freezing, you can start on your homemade ketchup. Believe it or not, this homemade ketchup recipe is so simple, you may never purchase store-bought ketchup again. In a pot, combine tomato paste, white vinegar, water, corn syrup, onion powder, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Continuously mix it as you bring it to a simmer, and then turn it off.
Finally, take the frozen molds out of the freezer and fry until golden-brown. Once they are done, immediately add a dash of salt and serve them with your homemade ketchup. These fun-shaped fries are sure to be a hit this summer (and beyond!).
