I Tried This “Yellowstone” Star’s New Coffee Brand and Now It’s My Go-To Every Morning
While I’d love to sit here and tell you what a big Yellowstone fan I am and how much I love Cole Hauser’s character, “Rip Wheeler,” I’ve actually never watched the show. I know I’m missing out, but the rave reviews I’ve heard from friends are enough to know that he’s a fan-favorite character with a budding love story with a woman named Beth, who always has a cup of coffee in his hand. I suppose that’s what led him to start Free Rein, a coffee company that embodies the spirit of Western cowboy culture.
Hauser and his four partners set out with a mission: to find a roaster that captured the spirit and quality of the West, and sure enough, they found it — a family in San Angelo, Texas, that has been roasting coffee for years. Together, the brand’s mission, according to its website, is “to bring great coffee to wherever dreams are chased,” and Free Rein is made to be just that. Available in eight different blends at $15.99 per 12-ounce bag, I decided to try the brand for myself — without knowing anything about Hauser or his background — and I have to say, it’s quite delicious.
What Is Free Rein Coffee?
The Texas-based coffee brand, founded by Yellowstone actor Cole Hauser, is made to capture the taste of the West in every cup. Partnering with a San Angelo family with over 25 years of coffee brewing expertise, this premium coffee has bold flavors that’ll satisfy every palate. From Hauser’s top pick, “American Dirt,” a rich Arabica blend; to “Homestead,” a balanced brew with chocolatey undertones; and “Mesteno,” a bold yet smooth Colombian roast, the range offers something for everyone. For those craving a taste of Texas, there’s “Texas Pecan,” with a nutty richness; and “Prospect,” a smooth, light roast. And, if you’re looking for a kick, try the sweet and spicy “Branded” or “Heavy Spur,” a high-caffeine option that’s still smooth and satisfying. And who could resist “Pumpkin Spice” adding a touch of fall to your cup? At $15.99 per 12-ounce bag, it’s a bit of a splurge — but well worth it for those seeking a taste of the “American spirit” in their morning brew.
Why I Love Free Rein Coffee
I’ve personally tried three flavors: American Dirt, Homestead, and Mesteno, and I must say, they’re absolutely delicious. Bold in flavor, full-bodied, and with a sweet aroma that fills your home, they make mornings feel more romantic. Being a chocolate lover, I particularly enjoyed the chocolatey notes in Mesteno and Homestead. American Dirt leans toward a French Roast, which was a bit too rich for my taste, but that’s the beauty of Free Rein — they offer a diverse range of blends to suit everyone’s palate. I appreciate that their beans are sourced from a trusted roaster in Texas, which aligns with the brand’s mission of embracing the American dream. Overall, if you’re seeking a coffee brand that provides variety, is American-made, and supports small-scale producers, Free Rein is an excellent choice. Available in pods, ground, and whole bean coffee, there’s sure to be an option that suits you.
